We designed the Bear Cub Kids Mattress to give growing sleepers the comfort and support they need without overcomplicating the experience for parents. Now, that straightforward approach has earned recognition from WIRED, which named the Bear Cub Kids Mattress its Best Value kids mattress in their roundup, The Best Kids’ Mattresses, Put Through the Toddler Test.
This September 2026 guide evaluated six kids mattresses with help from reviewer Nicole Kinning’s 2-year-old daughter. After months of at-home testing, WIRED selected the Bear Cub as its Best Value pick, highlighting its supportive hybrid construction, comfortable feel, reinforced edges, and accessible approach to a kids mattress.
How WIRED Tested the Best Kids Mattresses
WIRED’s testing went beyond comparing mattress specifications on paper. Kinning had her toddler sleep on each mattress for several months in her own bedroom, using the same Montessori-style twin bed frame throughout testing.
The evaluation focused on practical details parents are likely to notice in everyday life: how well her daughter slept, how easily she could climb onto the mattress, how the edges performed while a parent sat alongside the bed, and how cool the mattress cover felt during warm weather. WIRED also considered different constructions, price points, and features when selecting mattresses for the test.
That real-world approach makes the Best Value recognition especially meaningful to us. Kids mattresses have to handle much more than sleep—from bedtime stories to tossing, turning, and the occasional play session.
Why WIRED Named the Bear Cub the Best Value Kids Mattress
WIRED praised the Bear Cub for keeping its focus on the essentials. Kinning wrote that the mattress concentrates on “getting the fundamentals right” while delivering them at a price she considered fair.
Those fundamentals start with the Bear Cub’s hybrid construction. WIRED highlighted its gel memory foam comfort layer, reinforced edge coils, and soft Tencel™ cover. During testing—including what Kinning described as the occasional tickle fight—the edges remained supportive, and she did not feel the mattress sinking into the bed frame.
She ultimately described the Bear Cub’s overall feel as “plush and supportive.”
WIRED also noted one trade-off: the Bear Cub is not flippable, unlike some other mattresses included in the guide. Instead, we designed the Bear Cub with a consistent medium-firm sleep surface intended to balance cushioning with sturdy support for growing kids.
"I’d consider the Bear Cub the Toyota Camry of kids’ mattresses, and I mean that as the ultimate compliment. It doesn’t try to win you over with fancy claims. Instead, it focuses on getting the fundamentals right, and at a price that feels fair."
A Hybrid Mattress Designed for Growing Kids
The Bear Cub is an 8.5-inch hybrid mattress that combines foam comfort layers with a supportive coil system. Its construction includes a quilted Tencel™ cover, gel-infused memory foam, a responsive transition foam layer, and individually wrapped coils with reinforced coils around the perimeter.
We rate the Bear Cub at approximately 6.8 out of 10 on the firmness scale, giving it a medium-firm feel. Beneath the comfort layers, a 6-inch individually wrapped coil core provides durable support, while the gel-infused memory foam adds cushioning and cooling comfort at the surface.
The reinforced edge coils are particularly practical for a kids mattress. As WIRED’s testing demonstrated, a stable perimeter can matter during everyday moments when parents sit along the edge for bedtime stories or kids move and play across the mattress.
Materials Parents Can Feel Good About
Comfort and support matter, but we know parents also pay close attention to what goes into their child’s mattress.
The Bear Cub is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, meaning it has been tested to meet rigorous standards for low chemical emissions into indoor air. It also uses CertiPUR-US® certified foams and is made without fiberglass.
The mattress is available in two colors, Twin, Full, and Queen sizes, measures 8.5 inches tall, and comes with a risk-free sleep trial and Limited Lifetime Warranty.
What the WIRED Best Value Recognition Means to Bear
For us, being named WIRED’s Best Value kids mattress reinforces exactly what we set out to accomplish with the Bear Cub: create a comfortable, supportive, thoughtfully constructed mattress for kids while keeping the experience straightforward for parents.
We’re especially excited that the recognition came from months of real-world testing with a toddler. From supportive edges during playtime to a comfortable hybrid feel at bedtime, WIRED’s findings reflect the everyday situations we had in mind when designing the Bear Cub.
Parents don’t necessarily need the most complicated mattress for their child. They need one that gets the important things right: comfort, dependable support, durable construction, thoughtfully selected materials, and a design made with growing sleepers in mind. We’re proud to see WIRED recognize the Bear Cub for delivering on those fundamentals.
